Big Day for Haunui at Hawkes Bay
25 September 2017
Racing on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay Carnival saw plenty of highlights for Haunui Farm with Haunui stallion Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) to the fore again as New Zealand Derby-winner Gingernuts (NZ) (Iffraaj) showed the step up to open class was no barrier with a dominant victory in the Group One Windsor Park Plate (1600m) after an eye-catching run three weeks back in the Group One Tarzino Trophy over the 1400m trip. Now a three-time Group One-winner, Gingernuts heads to the Livermol Classic on the 7th of October as the horse to beat.
Haunui Farm client Emma Evans enjoyed a day to remember landing two events on the undercard with the super consistent Watch This Space (NZ) (Elusive City) making it back-to-back wins from the stable of Wayne Hillis whilst four-year-old mare Deals In Heels (NZ) (Iffraaj) took yet another step up after her impressive first-up win on the opening day of the carnival, to take her tally to four from five with black type undoubtedly on the horizon.
The first leg of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Filly of the Year Series proved a strong contest with Showcasing’s three-year-old filly Princess Rihanna (NZ) putting in arguably one of the performances of the day. Tardy out of the gates and missing the kick by two lengths, she stormed home for third in the Group Three Gold Trail Stakes (1200m), her effort seeing her firm for the Group One gavelhouse.com 1000 Guineas in November. Fellow Haunui graduate Astor (NZ) (Iffraaj) put in a brave performance to run fourth in what was her first attempt at blacktype with the trip away and step up in company sure to have been of great benefit going forward.
“Gingernuts was certainly impressive in winning his third Group One and he’s certainly shown that he can mix it with the older horses,” said Haunui Farm’s Managing Director, Mark Chitty. “It’s great for Iffraaj and I’m sure the team at Te Akau and the GNuts team enjoyed their night on Saturday,” he said. “And Princess Rihanna’s run in the Gold Trail bodes well for the next couple of months as she heads towards the 1000 Guineas. It would be great to see her break evenly with the field and I’m sure that’s something the team at Wexford will be working on. She was super consistent at two and it’s great to see her put in such a strong performance first up,” said Mark. “But the highlight was Emma Evans getting a double on the day. She’s a great client and the run of success she’s been having of late is certainly well deserved. Deals In Heels looks a very smart mare and I’m sure all going well, blacktype won’t be too far away,” he said.
