Tasleet wins the Duke of York for Showcasing
18 May 2017
Four-year-old entire Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing) went one better than his sire in the Group Two Duke of York Stakes (6f) overnight, completing an interrupted come-back to the winners circle where he hasn’t been seen in over a year.
A highly talented and consistent two-year-old, Tasleet was a stakes winner and multiple Group performer in his juvenile season with injury curtailing the majority of his three-year-old career.
Tasleet’s first appearance at four saw him finish runner-up in the Listed King Richard III Stakes at Leicester in his first race day appearance in a little over six months and last night’s demolition of a strong field has connections eyeing up the Group One Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot toward the end of June.
“He got a bad injury to a hind fetlock at three which took a long time to come right,” said trainer William Haggas who was clearly delighted with his charge’s performance. “He’s been in really good form at home. He’s a very talented horse and I’ve been nagging to get him back to six furlongs for a while,” he said post-race. “He’s got stronger and looks like a sprinter now – he’s not very big but is strong and very genuine.”
One of 15 stakes winners worldwide for Showcasing, Tasleet is a prime example of Showcasing’s ability to upgrade his mares with all 15 out of non-stakes winners or stakes producers. Interestingly, Showcasing’s tally of 15 stakes winners puts him ahead of fellow Haunui stallion Iffraaj, at the same stage of his career.
Haunui Farm’s Mark Chitty says, “With the Southern Hemisphere racing season beginning to wind down, Northern Hemisphere racing is just ramping up and it’s exciting to see a horse like Tasleet, who was so impressive at two, come back at four after an injury set-back and really stamp his mark on the sprinting scene up there. The team behind Tasleet are looking to turn him into a stallion prospect so I’m sure he’ll have a number of Group One targets outside of the Golden Jubilee and for Showcasing, it’s exciting to think he has another genuine Group One prospect heading to Royal Ascot after Quiet Reflection’s win in the Coronation Cup there last year.
“It was also great to see Showcasing’s close relation, Shutter Speed, win the Musidora Stakes for Juddmonte and John Gosden. Showcasing comes from a prolific blacktype family and she’s added her name to the list. We have another connection with the family as we own another close relation, Destined, with one of our long-time clients, Cathy Franich so, it’s been a good 24 hours all round.”Showcasing will stand at Haunui Farm in 2017 for a fee of $12,000 + GST.
