Two-year-old filly Millefiori (NZ) (Iffraaj) ticked the first box when it comes to Karaka Million contention with an impressive win on debut at Ellerslie on Saturday.
Lining up from the dominant stable of Jamie Richards and Te Akau, she was sent to the lead in a positive ride by Matt Cameron. After being headed by stable mate and highly fancied runner Sneaky Shark (AUS) (Capitalist), Millefiori found more and crossed the line with a neck to spare.
With a number of juveniles in contention for the Karaka Million on the 24th of January, Jamie Richards stated after the race the filly would have a short break and will have one more appearance before the big show.
IFFRAAJ (GB) (Zafonic) has tasted Karaka Million success already with XIONG FENG (NZ) taking out the 2016 rendition, however, Jamie Richards’ comment that the filly is only going to improve with time, you could make the assumption that anything she does at 2YO, is only going to be a bonus.
Whilst no longer shuttling to Haunui Farm, IFFRAAJ has two crops of yearlings still to hit the sale ring and his legacy as a sire of sires is already evident in the success of WOOTTON BASSET (GB) (Iffraaj) in the Northern Hemisphere, whilst as a broodmare sire, he is also stamping his mark with two-time New Zealand Horse of the Year MELODY BELLE (NZ) (Commands) among 19 stakes performers that he has already left as a broodmare sire.
